This 15-30 minute routine makes your brain smarter
This 15-30 minute routine makes your brain smarterThis 15-30 minute routine makes your brain smarterEverything popular is wrong? - ?Oscar WildeIn the book,BLUE ZONES Lessons for Living Longer From the People Whove Lived the Longest, author Dan Buettner details some incredible science on how to live the longest possible life. One of the key insights is to continually learn NEW and different things. You will age very quickly if you stop learning.Use different learning stylesLearning tons and tons about one idea or subject is good. But its also ineffective to learn about one thing in the same learning style.WHAT you learn about matters, but HOW you learn matters a lot mora.If you only read books, even if youre reading about multiple subjects, your brain will atrophy in certain areas, which will age you faster.According to 50 years of research on learning theory, we all have a dominant learning style. We all also have several backup learning styles we rely on when were in a difficult situa tion. However, there are also several other learning styles that each of us neglect and avoid.Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Some of these learning styles includeImagining which involves coming up with ideasReflecting which involves learning about the ideas you come up withAnalyzing which involves synthesizing what youve learning and making strategic plans about what to do with those ideasDeciding which involves making a decision on ONE WAY you will go with a specific ideaActing which involves DOING SOMETHING toward the attainment of your ideaExperiencing which involves learning from multiple angles, whether that be with other people, creating something, failing, or attemptingThe more learning styles you can regularly experience, the better and healthier your brain will be.Spend 15-30 minutes per day learning something TOTALLY DIFFERENT (do it just for fun, nut in an aggressi ve way)When you were a kid, you tried tons of different things. Your brain welches expanding and stretching left-and-right. Unfortunately, most people stop trying new things the older they get.If you want to make your brain healthier, and if you want to become a super-learner, its essential to continually learn different things.LanguagesLearning new languages is amazing for your brain. However, you dont want to learn those languages with the same methods. The more methods you can implement the better. For example, here are a few methods you could useUse an appUse flash-cardsWatch films in that languageHave conversations with people who speak the languageListen to music in the languageWrite journal entries in the languageEat food from the cultureThe more immersive the experience the better. However, even just actively learning something new for 15-30 minutes per day will open your brain and consciousness in so many ways.Musical InstrumentsLearning musical instruments is also very, ver y healthy for your brain. I recently departureed learning piano off a cool app. Its addictive A few days ago, I practiced for three hours straight I couldnt get myself to stop it was so fun.If you can gamify your learning, all the better. By gamify, I mean to make it into a game. In video games, you have quests or goals to accomplish. The reason I like the app Im learning piano on is that I have 15-minute lessons, and within those lessons, I have 5-10 sub-lessons. The competitor in me loves knocking-out as many lessons as possible.Just like in a video game, its fun to see how far you can go.How your brain changes when you learn something newThere is a lot of brain science into how this works and how to maximize the experience.Firstly, learning is all about memory - and about enhancing your memory. The best learners can develop a nearly photographic memory. This is a skill you can absolutely develop.Secondly, your confidence is all about winning, and creating quick wins - so the mor e you can win and keep winning, the more your confidence will boost.Thirdly, as you learn one subject, youll get creative breakthroughs in the other areas of your life. This is particularly true if youve developed mastery and expertise in a specific area. As you learn a new subject in a completely new learning style, youll make all sorts of unique connections in your brain related to your expertise. This is called, non-linear learning or indirect learning, and its perhaps the most effective learning tool.Albert Einstein, the Beatles, and several of the best innovators and artists got their biggest breakthroughs in an indirect and non-linear manner. For example, Albert Einstein was working in a patent shop, not an academic setting, when he got his insights about time relativity. The Beatles studied totally different and foreign music which led to their breakthroughs in Rock and Roll.Grant Achatz, considered one of the top chefs alive, studied abstract art to get inspiration for his co oking. How to maximize your experienceIf you really want to give yourself a brain-workout, here are some things you could doDaily, learn something totally different (it could be an instrument or a language, but it could also be something else like cooking, travel, public speaking whatever you want)Even though its just for fun, set goalsGamify the process as much as you can - you can make it a competition with friendsSpend 1530 minutes, at least 5 times per week, learning this thing (it will be a very healthy mental break from your job)Once every week or two when you have time, do an intensive 3-4 hour session when you totally focus-in and geek-outWhile in your deep intensive session, take 5-minute fitness breaks every 30 minutes like sprinting around your house and doing 50 push-upsDrink tons of waterHave a journal near you and document ALL of the creative insights you get that are either related or unrelated to your core expertiseAllow yourself to imagine where you could take this small learning hobby. Now that youre an adult, you can think about and approach this differently than when you were a kid. Rather than going through the motions, you can get creative with this. For example, rather than just learning the piano to play it, I also want to learn it to more fully develop a photographic memory and to enhance my artistic sides. I want to learn piano because music can literally heal and release suppressed emotions. But I also want to learn to write and compose amazing music because it will teach me about learning, creativity, and the brain. In other words, you want to have some profound WHYs behind what youre learning. But you also want to have specific milestones or achievements to keep yourself going, to gamify the process, to build your confidence, and to make it fun.Heres whats truly amazing When you learn new things, you change as a person. Changing is the most healthy thing you can do.You cant actually have hope for your future if you dont believe you c an change. The more you change, and the more you learn how to transform in a positive and intentional direction, the more hope youll have for your future.Hope is a powerful and positive EXPECTATION not just mere wishing. So, when you take 1530 minutes per day, focused exclusively on activating different areas of your brain, you heal yourself and make yourself younger. But you also infuse deep levels of HOPE into your future. Not only that, but you enhance the areas of your life where youve already developed deep mastery. You get to re-experience the beginners high and humility. You get a new perspective of yourself and the world. This pulls you from the rut and apathy of routine. It allows you to see the other areas of your life with fresh eyes. This changes EVERYTHING. As Wayne Dyer once said, When you change the way you see things, the things you see change.Youll start to infuse hope and healing into your loved onesPut simply, when you change your cognition, you transform your enviro nment, your psychology, and your biology. You change yourself and you change others - because you interact with them differently. You become more loving and interested in your relationships. Because your own hope and healing is deepening, you become a more powerful vessel for healing, hope, and transformation others. You love your family and friends more. You see them in different ways. You notice the small things. You appreciate those small things. You thank them and acknowledge them for those small things. You smile more - because youre learning and changing and healing. Youre appreciating this amazing this we call life more.Your imagination starts to take-off, and you remove limiting models of thinking. Again, non-linear learning is about seeing things from totally different perspectives. So, by practicing, playing, and challenging yourself in new ways, youll start to get insights to improve the current approaches youre taking in your work and in other areas.Put simply, if youre n ot doing this, youre missing-out HUGE.This article first appeared on Medium.

How To Stay Organized While Job Searching
How To Stay Organized While Job SearchingHow To Stay Organized While Job SearchingWhile it seems as if everyone has a soft spot for beautiful office supplies and organizational tools, the truth of the matter is that not everyone knows how to stay organized. This struggle can often come to light during the job search, when organization is one of the key skills that allows you to coordinate a resume, titel letter and interview with a new company. Fortunately, you dont have to be a certified Type-A nerd to manage a successful job hunt. If you tend to be a little scatterbrained, here are three things you can do to keep your job searched organized.Start Fresh on Your ComputerNo matter how cluttered your computer desktop or your file system, you can always start fresh for a current job hunt. Instead of hoping youll know where to find your updated information, create a new folder for each position. Label each folder with the company and job title you are applying for and include a new copy of your resume, cover letter and background notes. Maintain a Guide DocumentAs you find and apply for jobs, maintain an Excel spreadsheet that includes pertinent data regarding those positions. For example, you may want to record the link where you found the job, the way you applied (electronically or by email) and the date of your last follow-up. This will help you remember who you are talking to when you get a response. Choose One Calendar and Use ItIf you arent committed to one system for planning your appointments, youre leaving the door open to embarrassing scheduling conflicts. Whether you prefer a paper calendar, your personal digital calendar or your business digital calendar, its vital that you choose one and use it for all of your appointments so that you wont accidentally miss one or double-book yourself. This is also an important habit you can mention in your interviewto explain how you stay organized. If you decide to use a digital calendar tied to your workplace, use a cronyms to be vague. Appointment or unavailable are perfectly acceptable descriptions to have on your work calendar if you dont want to advertise the fact that you are interviewing for a new job.Keep Your Career Goals Organized, TooOrganization isnt just for physical and digital items, its also for your mental state and career goals. As Monica and Chandler from Friends showed us in a previous Simply Hired post, organizing your thoughts and making a clear path between the skills you have and the jobs for which you are qualified. Beyond making sure your files and calendars are organized, spend some time reflecting on why you are pursuing the jobs you are pursuing and which jobs will be the best fit for your five- and ten-year career goals. Dont let your scatterbrained nature derail your job hunt. Use these tips to stay organized as you find, apply and interview for a new job.

How to Answer a Question About Your Work Philosophy
How to Answer a Question About Your Work PhilosophyHow to Answer a Question About Your Work PhilosophyInterviewers for professional positions will often ask about your work philosophy, and theyll want to hear examples that demonstrate your philosophy in action. Youll get this question most often in careers that involve counseling, nursing, teaching, and executive management. Your philosophy is the approach that you take to your work. It shows your potential employer whether or not you fit in the style or culture of the company. Interviewers ask unterstellung types of questions to get a sense of your values and to determine if your philosophy is consistent with the orientation of their organization. Think of your philosophy as your brand, a clear-cut statement of who you are and how you apply that to your work. What the Interviewer Expects Your interviewer wants to hear many things in a job interview, but most of all, a potential employer wants to know what to expect from you as a n employee. So be ready with a well-thought-out, intelligent answer. Before you even start thinking about the details, keep in mind that honesty about yourself and your philosophy goes without saying. Dont makeup things about yourself to fit the job. If you have to do that, then that job probably isnt right for you. As your craft, your philosophy, remind yourself to be real and be consistent. Interviewers want to see a philosophy that reflects enthusiasm for your work, a strong work ethic and the depth of your experience. For some positions, potential employers may also be testing to see if youve kept up with trends in your field. Your resume details your work experience, but your philosophy sums up how you approach your work and what makes you successful at it. That gets to the heart of the matter for interviewers. Determining Your Work Philosophy Dont be daunted trying to define yourself. Do a self-assessment for your career. Think about what makes you good at what you do. For example, are you resourceful, someone who can think outside the box and find a solution no matter the limitations? Or are you a hard worker, giving that 110% effort every day? Are you a team player, someone who sees teamwork as essential to a successful organization? unterstellung are categories of attitudes toward work that make up a personal philosophy. Other categories include creativity, learning from failure or mistakes, being a visionary, dedication to helping or serving, motivation, being adaptable to new or constantly changing circumstances, ability to balance, thriving on uniqueness, being focused, or providing strong leadership. No one is just one of these categories. Mix and match and come up with your work ethics and attitudes to create your unique personal statement. How to Prepare To prepare your answer for a specific interview, start by researching the mission statement of the company youre interviewing with. This statement should be available on the companys we bsite. Learn about the goals and means of the company. Research its market niche. Understand its risks, demands, and competition. And then define how your philosophy will help that company in its goals. If you have any network connections at the company, you can also set up an informational interview to learn about the workplace culture. It may help to review some of the theorists who have shaped current practices in your field, but it is acceptable to mention that you are eclectic in your approach, tailoring your actions based on the situation. Just make sure you can describe the specific approaches you most often take to back up your answers. When asking follow-up questions, interviewers may ask for examples of how you have applied your philosophy. So be ready to describe specific situations, the actions you took, and the positive results you generated through your approach.

7 networking questions to ask that will make you more likable
7 networking questions to ask that will make you mora likable7 networking questions to ask that will make you more likableTo many, networking events sound as appealing as getting teeth pulled, but that doesnt mean they have to be so dreadful. Instead, great networking is all about having questions ready that start actual conversations, not mundane small talk. After asking dozens of professionals their go-to networking questions, I found two important patterns. First, the best questions are open-ended and cant be answered with a simple yes or no think essay questions instead of multiple choice. Second, the key to good networking may surprise you dont talk just about work. If youve ever worked in London, or in Europe, youll be familiar with the belief that people represent more than their job titles and salaries. Get to know the person in front of you.I asked some of the most successful people I know how they sharpened their networking skills. Here were the top seven responses that came up over and over again.1) What are your hobbies?Ive found out that colleagues non-work projects include woodworking, gardening, marathon training, volunteer firefighting, baking pastries and vocal lessons, explains Brittany Meyers, a writer and editor. I like the enthusiasm I see in people for something besides their work.Plus, Brittany says that knowing peoples hobbies makes it easier to remember everyone since getting faces and name tags straight is a challenge.2) What are you reading these days?Asking whats on someones nightstand or e-reader tells you more about the person youre meeting than a LinkedIn profile or geschftliches miteinander card ever could, notenzeichens Felicia Sullivan, marketing consultant and founder of Phoebe Kate. This one not only leads to more meaningful conversations, but it also makes it easier to follow up with people afterward. We met at that networking event isnt as memorable as so glad we got to talk about our mutual love of House of Cards.3) Any good travel plans coming up?I was born and raised in Texas, lived for almost 15 years in California, lived in Boston and Mexico and traveled to Australia and Europe before landing back in Texas, says Kat Clemons, director of community development at nonprofit Hope Village. I love finding out that people have awesome traveling stories or are from somewhere totally different. You can also ask people where they grew up, but note that the question can be misinterpreted as a loaded one for minorities or immigrants since it can have an implication of youre not from around here. If they volunteer it, however, feel free to dive into a conversation about it.Everyone has an origin story, or theyre planning a trip soon, so theres bound to be an interesting conversation without having to drop the so, what do you do? question right off the bat.4) I love that scarf Where did you get it?I find that genuinely complimenting someone on a statement piece that they are wearing immediately breaks the ice, as it makes the other person feel good and they are more open during the conversation, explains Chanele McFarlane, founder and editor-in-chief of Do Well Dress Well.Additionally, McFarlane notes that wearing something interesting (like an bold necklace or bright blazer) to a networking event is a great way to use appearance as a conversation-starter.5. Do you have a wow project youre involved with?If you want to elevate the typical what do you do? question, add a little nuance by letting people brag. It assumes people do have a significant project in the works and allows them to talk about whatever is at the top of their mind, explains David Burrows, a tech entrepreneur. Who doesnt like to show off the things theyre most proud of?6) What are you passionate about?People are used to be asked what they do and where they work, so Ive seen them be pleasantly startled by this question, says Tammy Tibbetts, founder and CEO of nonprofit Shes The First. Its a way of showing you care about them m ore than who they work for.Asking this doesnt have to sound like a stiff job interview question, either working it into the conversation can be as easy as, So if you werent doing job, what would you do instead?7) Have you been to city or event space before? Whats it like? Bonding over your physical surroundings or the general event environment makes for a much more natural conversation starter than asking what someone does. Ive learned a lot about people because of this approach, says Melissa Jones, recruitment and HR specialist at the United Technologies Research Center. It breaks up the monotony of where you work, which youll eventually get around to anyway. This article was first published on March 24, 2017.

Product Marketing vs Product Management
Product Marketing vs Product Management We need gender neutral dress codes in the workplace. If you dont yet agree with that statement, look no farther than a 55-page presentation given to women executives at Ernst Young in a June 2018 training. pThe presentation, which made headlines last month when an offended participant leaked it to the Huffington deutsche bundespost/a, reinforced gendered stereotypes of how women should dress and present themselves at work. Some highlights, which are actually lowlights in terms of equality in the workforceul class=ee-ul ee-ulliA list of appearance blunders for women to avoid, including no-nos like too-short skirts, plunging necklines, bottle blonde, flashy jewelry/liliOutfit and grooming suggestions to minimize distractions from your skills sic set like good haircut, manicured nails, and well-cut attire/liliAdvice on how to dress dont flaunt your body sexuality scrambles the mind/li/ulpThe women, there to invest in t heir professional development, were not learning how to be better leaders or combat sexist stereotypes at work, but instead were being lectured to about what to wear and how to groom themselves.pWhile the presentation wasnt the official EampY dress code, it does highlight bias and assumptions made around gender that women have to manage. And this particular training focused only on the male-female binary. Employees who identify as transgender or nonbinary might feel even more burdened by dress code policies based on gender. pImagine how much more productive all employees, regardless of gender, could be, if they werent focused on avoiding dress code policing.pTraditional gender-based dress codes can also discriminate on the basis of race. Many grooming guidelines for women, including rules on acceptable haircuts, are extra burdens for black employees, particularly those who want to wear their hair in natural styles. In 2010, Chastity Jones got a job offerto be a customer tafelgeschir r representative from Catastrophe Management Solutionsbut the offer was contingent on her cutting off her locs. When she refused, the company took back the job offer, and when she sued, with the help of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, she lost her case in 2013 and again in 2016, when her appeal was dismissed. pAnd beyond forcing women of color to maintain their hair in a way thats deemed acceptable, gender-based dress codes can also discriminate against people of certain religions. Employees whose faiths keep them from cutting their hair or necessitate that they wear certain clothing (including head coverings) shouldnt be forced to adapt their beliefs to what their employer deems professionally appropriate for a woman at work.pThe possibility for gender-, race-, and faith-based discrimination posed by prescriptive employee dress codes has led the Human Rights Campaign to recommendthat if an employer has a dress code, it should modify it to avoid gender stereotypes and e nforce it consistently. Requiring men to wear suits and women to wear skirts or dresses, while legal, is based on gender stereotypes. Alternatively, codes that require attire professionally appropriate to the office or unit in which an employee works are gender-neutral.h3Okay, So Gender Neutral Dress Codes Sound Good. What Do They Look Like?/h3pIn their simplest (which, in my opinion, also means best) form, gender neutral dress codes at the workplace can take the form of General Motors dress policy. When now-CEO Mary Barra was VP of global human resources for the automotive giant, she replaced their 10-page dress code with two words/a Dress appropriately. pIn the article linked above, the author explains why Barras dress code works so well She avoided assumptions, instead choosing to trust her employees judgment, which in turn empowered all employees and was particularly impactful for women. pFor workplaces that need more specificity about what employees can wear, HR should follow i n the footsteps of other institutions that have successfully adopted gender-neutral dress codes. Namely, high schools.pAfter a wave of protests, social media outrage, and thoughtful advocating, several schools have revamped their dress codes/a, which tended to put undue burden on female students. New guidelines apply to all students, regardless of their gender. Instead of specifying the length of skirts versus shorts or the width of a cami strap versus a tank top, a Virginia high schools new gender-neutral dress codesimply defines what must be covered clothing must cover areas from one armpit across to the other armpit, down to approximately three to four inches in length to the upper thighs.pstrongWhat does that look like at work?/strong pSpell out specific dress code rules by article of clothing, not by gender, use non-gendered pronouns, and make sure that any grooming guidelines could apply to anyone. Dont place burdens on anyone based on their gender, and try to empower employee s to manage their own appearance in accordance with professional expectations.pFor business casual workplaces, try this, adapted from Forbes/a Employees should dress in business casual attire, which could include casual slacks and skirts, collared shirts, blouses, or sweaters. Inappropriate attire includes sportswear, jeans, and unkempt clothing, among other options. Please exercise good judgment.pFor business formal workplaces, you could use the following Traditional business attire, including dresses, suits, and pantsuits, is required for external meetings with clients or prospects. Employees should use discretion on other occasions and are expected to demonstrate good judgment. pAnd for casual workplaces, which are on the riseaccording to Indeed/a, 50% of companies allow employees to dress casually every day, as of 2019go with something simple, like this, adapted from The Balance/a Dress comfortably for work, but please do not wear anything that could offend your coworkers or mak e them feel uncomfortable. That includes clothing with profanity, hate speech, or exclusionary language. Your clothing, while casual, should show common sense and professionalism.pNo matter the level of formality your dress code needs to define, make sure youre thinking from the perspective of all employeescurrent as well as futureand creating an environment where they can thrive.p----pstrongWant to share these tips with your company? /strongShow them this handy one-page guide on creating a gender neutral dress code p class=shortcode-media shortcode-media-rebelmouse-image img uralt=Gender Neutral Dress Code Guide class=rm-shortcode data-rm-shortcode-id=UGVL4K1574631551 data-rm-shortcode-name=rebelmouse-image data-runner-src=https//assets.rebelmouse.io/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpbWFnZSI6Imh0dHBzOi8vYXNzZXRzLnJibC5tcy8yMjEwMDE3Ni9vcmlnaW4uanBnIiwiZXhwaXJlc19hdCI6MTU3NDc2NjEyMX0.5akget5uOA_9aHMcPUxY1YM_Zn2w2Yhcj7m_HSCqg7I/img.jpg?width=980 id=a14b6 type=lazy -image/ pbr/

How being a boss at home helped me be a boss in the office
How being a boss at home helped me be a boss in the officeHow being a boss at home helped me be a boss in the officeWith Mothers Day around the corner, I realized there is a strong connection between motherhood and my other job not the one of mom to teenage boys, but my work as a leadership consultant, thought-leader, and executive coach. So, whether its being the boss of your children or a geschftsleben leader, there is typically a paradigm shift required. Our children and leaders need enough room to successfully do their new job, step into their new accountabilities, build new skills, including messing up, learning and growing but ultimately a good boss supports, teaches, and coaches to ensure success. We should expect challenges and setbacks, as well as surprise and delight when they show us what theyre truly capable of.When I work with business leaders to prepare for and take on bigger jobs, we often spend time understanding (and avoiding) the typical leadership transition traps. In business, here are some of the classic things that trip up leadersThey fail to trust and empower the leaders who work for them (they feel they can do it better or they arent sure of capabilities, so they keep it for themselves)They hold on too tight to what they did before and how they did it (even though the new job requires something very different from them)They arent sure how to create value in their new role if they arent doing the work anymora, they arent sure how to spend their timeIn truth, for many of us, these are the exact same things that trip us up as parents. As our kids get older they force us to adjust our role and purpose. They insist on mora independence, freedom, and autonomy and for the most part, they are highly capable. As parents, we are now leading leaders and just like leaders in business, it requires an adjustment. In the context of work, this seems obvious, yet as parents, this transition can be so much harder and less apparent.Ladders is now on Smart NewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Most days, I feel like Im a much better leadership consultant than mother, but I do know there are some extremely important leadership learnings Ive faced as a mother that I apply to my consulting. As parents, we have one true purpose prepare our children to go out into the world independently and responsibly, with confidence and kindness, to do great things. Summer Internship Basics
Summer Internship BasicsSummer Internship BasicsEvery year, young people from all over the world search and apply for their dream internships. Demographics of those applying for coveted internship spots has changed over the years, with high school seniors, college freshman, and college sophomores all vying for positions historically reserved for college juniors and seniors. With all of these new candidates in the mix, employers are rethinking recruitment strategies. The Basics of a Summer Internship Summer internships are usually eight to twelve weeks long and follow the school semesters. Depending on when the student gets out of school, a summer internship usually starts in May or June and continues through August. The most common timeframe for summer internships is to begin right after Memorial Day and to run through the end of the first week of August. Other Benefits of an Internship Besides Experience ansicht opportunities can be full-time or part-time, paid or unpaid. Al l unpaid internshipsshould follow the guidelines set out by the US Department of Labor in the FLSA (Fair Labor Standards Act).Typically, students are able to receive college credit for their internships, but each school has different policies regarding internship credit. To find out more about this, visit your schools career center. The Purpose of Pursuing an Internship Internships provide students with hands-on learning experience even as they gain a glimpse into the real world, giving them a front row seat to a potential career choice. They go into the internship thinking they want to work at a specific company or in a specific industry and they come out of the internship either having confirmed those thoughts or having decided to pursue something completely different. The idea is that they get to know now rather than when they graduate. So many people move into jobs they dislike after graduation because they didnt know any better. Internships are a good way to curb that likel ihood. Not only dostudents who participate in summer internships get hands-on learning experience theyre also building their resumes. The number one question asked at job interviews after college is where did you intern? Its a good idea to have a ready answer to that question in order to stand out from the swimmingpool of other applicants. Internships also provide networking opportunities. If you ask most college students about their professional network, theyll admit it doesnt exist. Internships change that. Students leave internships with a Rolodex of professional contacts who can help them gain future employment, whether by serving as a reference or by alerting them to job opportunities. A summer internship stands out on a students resume and is among the best things a young person can do to prepare for the real world and college graduation. To find summer internship opportunities visit the career center, and websites such as?Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com, Internships.com, WayUp.co m,andInternQueen.com.
